Snellville’s population growth truly began in the ‘60s when developers eyed the affordable and available land and dependence upon the automobile became commonplace. According to 2000 Census estimates, Snellville has a population of more than 15,000 (which has no doubt grown in the years since), and has created a much different settlement than what attracted founders James Sawyer and Thomas Snell in 1879. Modern-day Snellville is located east of Atlanta in Gwinnett County and enjoys the feel of a small town along with the amenities of a major city.
Among the activities to enjoy include T.W. Briscoe Park, an 87-acre featuring a lake, fitness trails, tennis courts, soccer fields, swimming pool, and a number of basketball courts. The Snellville Days Festival, a two-day event , is touted as one of the Top 20 tourism events in May, according to the Southeastern Tourism Society. Some celebrities who hail from Snellville include American Idol Runner-Up Dianna DeGarmo, professional football players Jason Elam, David Greene and David Pollack, and 2004 Olympic Medalist (Swimming) Amanda Weir |
