With a population of more than 16,000 in 2000, Newnan is a center of planned growth and activity in the west central Georgia region. The planned growth worked, for the 2005 census estimates the population to have been almost 25,000. The city has five historic districts listed in the National Register of Historic Places. During the Civil War, Newnan acted as a hospital city for both the Union and Confederate troops, and was largely unscathed. As a result, the town is still home to much antebellum architecture.
Some well-known Newnan natives include Atlanta Falcons linebacker Keith Brooking, country music artist Alan Jackson, and the late newspaper humorist Lewis Grizzard. |
