Historic Dawsonville was named after William C. Dawson, who served as a brigade commander in the Creek Indian War of 1836 and was an active legislator in the state and national Congress.  Dawsonville is about 50 miles north of downtown Atlanta and is host to a number of retail outlet malls.  The city has easy access to the state’s road system, as it at the junction of state highways 9, 53, 136, and GA 400.

There are a number of activities to pursue in Dawsonville, which include visiting Amicalola Falls State Park and Lodge – featuring the tallest waterfalls east of the Mississippi River – boating on Lake Lanier, shopping at the outlet malls, handpicking pumpkins at Burt’s Pumpkin Farm, or touring the Kangaroo Conservation Center, which is the largest kangaroo collection outside of Australia.  NASCAR fans will note that racing champion Bill Elliot hails from this town, as his nickname pays homage to his hometown: “Awesome Bill from Dawsonville.”
