A touch of Bavaria in North Georgia…Helen is a re-creation of a quaint Alpine village and is Georgia’s third most popular tourist destination. From mid-September through October, Helen hosts the longest Oktoberfest in the south, and Alpenfest offers entertainment from Thanksgiving through December. No matter the season, Helen offers a staggering array of more than 200 specialty and import shops, offering everything from candle making to cuckoo clocks. Appetites are whetted with options ranging from schnitzel, sauerbraten or wurst with German wines and beers to a traditional southern country meal of grits, country ham, and biscuits and gravy. Of course, one cannot overlook the homemade fudges, candies and funnel cakes!
Residents and visitors alike also enjoy festivals and special events, such as a hot air balloon races, Winefest, Volksmarch, the Fourth of July fireworks, and the Bavarian Nights of Summer. Other attractions include Anna Ruby Falls in the heart of the Chattahoochee National Forest, the Habersham Winery, and Black Forest Bear Park. With so much activity in and around Helen, it’s no wonder this area is as popular as it is!
